POWER OF THE PEN English Language Writing Contest
In 2002, the first Power of the Pen English language writing
contest for senior high school students in Okinawa was organized by the Okinawa Chapter of JALT
to encourage high school students to improve their English writing skills.
Announcements were sent out to all high schools in Okinawa inviting students
to participate in the writing contest. Students who responded were sent three questions, each targeted at
a different mode of writing: narrative, descriptive, or persuasive. The contest was held on 9 June 2002.
At the start of the contest, the students were informed that the persuasive mode question had been
selected. Students were then given ninety minutes to write a 300-word essay.
The persuasive mode topic was:
What is the best way to improve the environment in Okinawa?
Evaluation was based upon a set of criteria established by the Okinawa JALT POP
organizing committee. One grand prize winner and three first place winners were presented trophies and
scholarships at the subsequent regular meeting of Okinawa JALT held on 30 June 2002.
