Power of the Pen Contest
POWER OF THE PEN
English Language Writing Contest

In 2002, the first Power of the Pen English language writing contest for senior high school students in Okinawa was organized by the Okinawa Chapter of JALT to encourage high school students to improve their English writing skills.

Announcements were sent out to all high schools in Okinawa inviting students to participate in the writing contest. Students who responded were sent three questions, each targeted at a different mode of writing: narrative, descriptive, or persuasive. The contest was held on 9 June 2002. At the start of the contest, the students were informed that the persuasive mode question had been selected. Students were then given ninety minutes to write a 300-word essay.

The persuasive mode topic was:

What is the best way to improve the environment in Okinawa?

Evaluation was based upon a set of criteria established by the Okinawa JALT POP organizing committee. One grand prize winner and three first place winners were presented trophies and scholarships at the subsequent regular meeting of Okinawa JALT held on 30 June 2002.

The winners of the 2002 contest were:

GRAND PRIZE: Yuka Kinjo Naha-Nishi SHS
FIRST PRIZE: Saki Kinjo Naha SHS
FIRST PRIZE: Shin'ichiro Oroku Okinawa Shogaku SHS
FIRST PRIZE: Mary Jo Okudaira Naha-Nishi SHS
HONORABLE MENTION: Tadashi Teruya Okinawa Shogaku SHS

We wish to extend our congratulations to all the students who participated, and our deepest appreciation to all the high school teachers who helped promote the event, and helped their students prepare. Thanks also to all those who helped in organizing and conducting the competition.
